What Is Enriched?
Many foods in grocery stores contain ingredients labeled “enriched.”
When grains are heavily processed, important natural nutrients are removed. Manufacturers then add back a small number of synthetic vitamins and minerals.
Common nutrients added during enrichment:
- Iron
- Folic Acid
- Niacin
- Riboflavin
- Thiamine
Why Foods Are Enriched
During refining, parts of the grain that contain natural nutrients are removed. To compensate, certain vitamins are added back to the finished product.
Where You See Enriched Ingredients
- White bread
- Pasta
- Crackers
- Cereals
- Baked goods
- Snack foods
The Goal of Not Enriched
Not Enriched helps people understand enrichment and identify foods that avoid enriched ingredients.
